Re-using a painted canvas

Re-using a painted canvas

787b0389d6bf9c7fc727fc0ef0c78d3aI have many friends who are professional artists.  Canvases can become expensive especially if you are painting larger pieces of art.   Many artists frequent estate sales, thrift shops, garage sales, etc and buy painted canvases of an unfortunate looking nature (ugly as mud).  They reuse these canvases – easy peasy.

GESSO is a substance that you can buy or make.  It’s much like thick primer white painte.  You just take a brush or roller and paint over the old canvas and voila’!  A blank canvas to create your master piece!

Here’s an instructional video — just one of many out there. <<< VIDEO>>>>

Here’s how to make your own Gesso at home  <<<GESSO AT HOME>>>>  google it as well — tons of videos out there!

Now go paint!

Collection Dog Figurines

Collection Dog Figurines

IMG_3648Everyone has ‘their thing’.  Collections that is.   My collections are hard wired. I love sailboat/ ship models, dog figurines, and flying pigs.  Don’t judge.  Just ask my husband about my shoe collection.  When we first began dating — and he eventually peeked into my closet —-  I remember watching him as he opened the door and sort of stumbled back a bit.  His eyes opened wider and his mouth dropped to his chest.  I stood there blinking wondering what in the world he was gawking at.  Softly he muttered –  ‘I’ve never seen so many shoes in my life!’   I stood there blinking even faster as a pout emerged…….  Huh?  I stated gently –  ‘I’m a girl — I must have choices.’  Point made.  Ahem.

Back to my story here.  I adore dog figurines.   For me adding something to my collection isn’t about the label or brand – which isn’t the case for many.  For me it’s what strikes my fancy.  It can have a broken ear —  which makes me wrinkle my nose and think ‘ahhh — he just needs love and to be repaired’. No ryhme or reason here.  Which my husband will attest to readily.     It’s not that it’s a Royal Doulton or Made in Occupied Japan, or whatever…it’s just what makes me happy.  That’s what true collecting is about.  What floats your boat!  However, there’s also the element into identifying these collections that we take into our lives and homes (much to a spouses chagrin at times — hehehe).   Even a broken figurine (which I’ll tell you how to repair such) has character.  Perfect is quite boring sometimes.  I bond with my little fellas.

More commonly seen are Staffordshire Dogs .  Royal Doulton is another well known collectible for many things.  There are many more as you well know.

Collectors Weekly is a WONDERFUL way to familiarize yourself with who made what

To REPAIR your treasures — here are a few helpful sites.  I use fingernail polish (it’s glazed and works much like cermaric paint.)

Collections are obtained to surround yourself with things that make you happy, inspire you.  Your home is like a nest.  Put in it things (and people) that bring pleasure.

Primitive Tobacco Baskets

Primitive Tobacco Baskets

4e42d932b3fd738b450168d8f596ef6cI’m using the word primitive here however….  you could also use antique… vintage really wouldn’t fit the bill.    These round or square type baskets are very shallow, not quite flat – they were used for drying tobacco leaves or herbs in some cases (large herbs because of the large open areas and loose weave obviously to let plant material begin to dry immediately).

Used in today’s world in the decorating arena, they make very handsome wall displays, perhaps on a hearth or statement piece above furniture.   They range in prices all over the chart.   I come across these quite a lot in my estate sales.

People who enjoy basket collecting have been seeking these fiercely –  so grab them if you see one at an estate sale or garage sale.  You can find them in rural areas hanging on a nail forgotten in a barn.

As you can see from the photos below, in the decorating scheme they can be used in rustic settings or more traditional themes.

P. Buckley Moss

P. Buckley Moss

asa fire drill

I first came across P. Buckley Moss at one of my estate sales (when I owned Peachtree Estate Sales in ATL).  This was a home in N. Atlanta – the lady of the house was from Connecticut.  The house had an upper East Coast feel.  She collected P. Buckley Moss – and she had  A LOT of her prints and a few original pieces.   I spent a lot of time in the home preparing for the upcoming sale.  The family members didn’t want much of what was in the home – so the home had a very lived in feel – as if the occupants had gone to the grocery store and were coming back at any moment – even though she had been gone for almost two years.  I’ve seen P Buckley Moss art off and on — but never on this scale.  I became very fond of many of the pieces.  And found myself sitting and smiling as I went over the extensive collection.  They are very peaceful works of art.

You can read about the artist >HERE<.

Art is such a personal journey —  it’s interesting what you find pleasing and what moves you.  — Kimy Stewart

Sisal Rugs

12508733_10207369537908743_8954967296982996387_nI love the look and feel of sisal area rugs.  They remind me of summers and the beach.  Long-lasting natural material that gives any room that instant comfortable feel.

A great way to purchase sisal rugs at a great discount would be at estate sales!
